Why we team up with Modell’s:  We team up with Modell’s for several reasons.  We have the opportunity to work with our Community Ambassador Jamal Jones, who does a great job working with our organization.   Also, Modell’s has created an extended relationship between our Club and our families.  Modell’s has all the equipment we need for all our sports and the pricing is good.

On Friday, September 10th, Modell’s Community Ambassador Jamal Jones of the DC/MD region led the Back to Football Friday event. The DC Department of Parks and Recreation helped to set up the whole event and provided most of the set up which included the stage and grill. With a great turnout and a lot of support from vendors, the DC DPR also made sure all of the kids attended.

Safeway donated the food to the DC DPR for the event. Powerade was on site and supplied the drinks. DC DPR’s staff did all the cooking on the grill. The United Way was there with their staff providing t-shirts and other giveaways, promoting their “Fun, Fly and Fit” campaign. They also had a trainer attend the event to do fitness activities with the kids. The radio station, 106.7 the fan, provided entertainment with their games and prizes. They also helped with the raffle prizes we gave away.

All in all it was a great event and a good time! Thank you to all who attended, participated and volunteered!

Wendy and her daughter Regan, 9, met with the Arundel Mills Modell’s manager Dan Kearns, and Community Ambassador Jamal Jones for the gift card presentation. The second $500 gift card award was then presented to Chris, president of the Gardens Figure Skating Club in Maryland. Chris’ daughter Nomi, 15, came along for the presentation. My daughter was the youngest individual skater (age 8 ) in the 2008 US Figure Skating National Showcase competition. Her Light Entertainment program was one that she chose as a tribute to the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We lived in Houston, TX during those storms and her life was forever changed (really all of our lives) by what she saw and experienced. Her character for her program was the Mardi Gras Queen and she skated to “When The Saints Go Marching In”. She competed against much older skaters that had much bigger jumps – but she skated her heart out and placed 2nd in the preliminary round to make the finals and 8th out of 39 skaters overall. It was an amazing moment that everyone who was there will always remember – this little kid skating her heart out as a tribute to all her friends in the Gulf Coast area. This year at Showcase, people remembered her as the Mardi Gras Queen.
