Wendy and her daughter Regan, 9, met with the Arundel Mills Modell’s manager Dan Kearns, and Community Ambassador Jamal Jones for the gift card presentation. The second $500 gift card award was then presented to Chris, president of the Gardens Figure Skating Club in Maryland. Chris’ daughter Nomi, 15, came along for the presentation. My daughter was the youngest individual skater (age 8 ) in the 2008 US Figure Skating National Showcase competition. Her Light Entertainment program was one that she chose as a tribute to the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We lived in Houston, TX during those storms and her life was forever changed (really all of our lives) by what she saw and experienced. Her character for her program was the Mardi Gras Queen and she skated to “When The Saints Go Marching In”. She competed against much older skaters that had much bigger jumps – but she skated her heart out and placed 2nd in the preliminary round to make the finals and 8th out of 39 skaters overall. It was an amazing moment that everyone who was there will always remember – this little kid skating her heart out as a tribute to all her friends in the Gulf Coast area. This year at Showcase, people remembered her as the Mardi Gras Queen.

On Sunday, 8/8/10, John Toribio, 14 years old, passed away as a result of drowning. He LOVED football, & on his facebook page read the following in his “about me”: “I Rap Im A Cool Kid Unless Yuh Get Me Tight ..I Love Wilson(my Football)I pLAyFor Fox Roks TeaM The Raivens. mY mOttO iS bE BEtter Than Good enOugH aND JuSt dO iT.fINALY mY fAV rAPPER iS DrizZY dRAKE or TyGa CNt NamE a SoNG i Dnt kNO OR iNFo BoUtEm” … My son was his teammate on the FoxRok Football team in NE Philadelphia, PA & he’s too young to submit an entry so asked me to. He was helping him w/his position the last Thursday he saw him & talks about how dedicated he was to the sport of football.
