March Madness Has Begun

General | Mar 17th, 2014

March Madness is in full swing, which means it is time to fill out your bracket! And those preparing their brackets should be focused on trying to predict who the upsets will be this season. As we’ve seen in the past, basing your bracket on a team’s seed may not be the best decision. Last year we witnessed Florida Gulf Coast (#15 seed) beat Georgetown (#2 seed) and San Diego State (#7 seed). In 2012, we also saw a number fifteen seed, Lehigh, beat a number two seed, Duke. When it comes to March Madness, all teams bring their A game and the underdogs could very well come out on top.

This season, people should prepare for many surprises. It was already a shock that Louisville was seeded fourth in the Midwest, as many thought they would be number one. However, the number one seed went to Wichita State which is the last undefeated team in the country and with Michigan seeded at number two, that means three of last year’s Final Four participants are fighting for one spot this year. With Florida, Virginia and Arizona also at number one it will be interesting to see the outcome of this year’s Final Four because who’s to say that the contenders will be number one seeds. We’ve seen a pattern in the past two years of the fifteenth seed upsetting the second. We should be on the lookout for Eastern Kentucky, American, Wofford and Milwaukee who are all number fifteen seeds this year because one of these teams could very well be the Cinderella story. Some advice, don’t overrate March Madness seeds when creating your bracket, ignoring the seed numbers may be a good decision. Any team can change the game, which is what makes March Madness so exciting.
